Indoor season is upon us

09/26/2007

Now that everyone is going inside, here's what we have to look forward to this winter:

  • 43rd annual Heart Of America tournament (10/12/07) - This annual singles/doubles tournament is coming up in three weeks, so get your entry form and payment in. I have the link to the entry form and online site at the top of the page, and I'll keep it up there until tourney time.
  • OPAC handball league (10/23/07) - We've made some changes to the league, and as soon as it's all finalized look for some big updates coming to the league section of this website. We're having a meeting with the captains to go over the changes next week, then the draft is the 16th, with league play the following Tuesday.
  • MSU Bear Bash (11/16/07) - Missouri State's annual fundraiser tournament is coming up in mid-November, let's send some KC representation down there this year and help out our college buddies. Entry Form here.
  • 61st annual Handballesta (11/30/07) - The country's oldest tournament will be at the end of November at the OPAC again this year. Don't miss this one.
  • KCAC Roast (December '07) - A lot of misbehavers this year, so who gets slaughtered for it all will be quite a contested race. Stay tuned for this one.
  • KCK handball league (late December '07) - We'll be starting up the KCK league towards the end of the OP league. Slated for late December, this could start in January depending on dates with the OP league. Continuing our new tradition, we're going to build on what was fun last year. Dinner and drinks we'll be mandatory after the matches.
  • The Bob Symon memorial tournament - Take a drive up to beautiful St. Joe and play in Scot and Jon Symon's annual handball bash. Fun and always competitive, and there's even a gentlemen's club across the street from the courts. Can it get any more stressful? Click here for more info.

We've got plenty of handball to occupy us until we can play 3 wall again, so I guess we'll make the best of it. If there's anything I left off that you would like to see added, let me know.

Results from Tuesday night Grudge match

09/12/2007

Last nights undercard match ended in controversy when Charlie "Pizza Boy" Sutera went down with a final point "injury". Charlie's hamstring seemed to have seized up on him right as Nick "Out" Scherzer and his partner Mark "Double Fault" Slogan were getting ready to score the match point. Charlie also cried foul by accusing his substituted partner, Eric "Perfect" Storm of taking a dive. Until a consensus is reached regarding the hullabaloo from last night, Mark Slogan has assumed control of Charlie's restaurant, Sutera's Old San Francisco in the West Bottoms. Slogan has immediately lowered beer prices, raised all of the staff's salary, and wiped clean Eric Storm's outstanding beer tab. I will update more on this story as it develops.

Bear Bash 2007

09/12/2007

From Eric Hillgren

The Bear Bash will be held the weekend of the 16th-18th in November, as we mentioned prevouisly we hope for a big turn out this year from the midwest players and players around the nation. This tournament is a fundraiser for the 2008 National Handball Collegiate Tournament and MSU Handball players, which is being held at Missouri State University. We would also enjoy seeing supporters in late February, 20th-24th, cheering on the Bears for a ten national championship!!!!

Handball is the perfect game,
Eric Hillgren President, MSU Handball

Entry form is on the right.

Grudge Match!!

09/07/2007

Join us this coming Tuesday, September 11th, for the grudge matches. Wednesday night at Sutera's a lot of words were said, and a lot of money was laid down, and the conclusion is a singles match between Matt Campion and Nick Disidore. Lou thinks that Nick's still got it, but Matt disagrees. There's only one way to settle it, on the court! And in the exciting undercard, Master's "champions" Charlie Sutera and Gary Storm will be battling Nick Scherzer and Mark Hogan in a chicken parmesean match. Hogan believes Charlie should bread his chicken parmesean, Charlie doesn't agree. So let's settle it on the court! If Nick and Hogan win, Charlie has to make them dinner that night of the Chicken Parm, only this time with breading!

The undercard begins at 4:30, the main event will follow immediately after. So come on down and enjoy some bbq, beers, and handball.

PS - New Poll on the left, vote now!

Also, the Wormburner golf tournament is September 24th, click here to view the entry form.

We had a tremendous crowd over the weekend, and the tournament was jam-packed, featuring over 132 handball players. With court temperatures hovering around 120 degrees, players were kept well hydrated and given frequent breaks to keep anyone from getting sick. Thanks to all of our friends who came in from out of town, and we look forward to having you back. Al Viets took more pictures, and I'll have that up in the next week or so.

PS - Outdoor season is not over, the weather is still nice, get your butts out to the courts!

News

04/03/2007

The date for the KC Metro Singles is April 20-22nd. Click here or on the link on the right for your entry form. This tournament is very competitive because of the loaded contenders bracket and because of the fast courts at the YMCA. They just refinished the floors too so they're a lot of fun right now.

We have one more week in league left. We're trying to make those matches outdoor matches, but the forecast this week is not good so we're going to try for next week. We're going to try to have our final party at that time as well with beers and BBQ. Only paid participants of the KCK handball league are invited.

Also, on January 18th we're going to be having tacos at the club after the matches. This is coming out of the league dues, so you already paid for it (If you paid your dues), so join us for a delicious mexican banquet.

I have added the schedule and am putting together the rosters for the league. You can see it under the leagues link. We will begin play on December 7th because of Handballesta this weekend. Also, I added a new poll. This is not the official roast poll, that would be Disidore's email or voicemail, but this is a hypothetical poll to see who you would like to see roasted. Listed in the poll are the current finalists.

League Rules

11/21/2006

Here are the league rules for the KCK handball league starting November 30th Dec 7th:

  • 4 teams, with approximately 10 players on each team.
  • Each team will start 7 or 8 players a week.
  • 2 doubles matches, 2 singles matches, and a 5th match to be negotiated by the captains.
  • After league every Thursday we will convene at the KCAC for post match analysis. (Non-KCAC members are welcome to join us on these nights)

  • Winner keeps the ball.
  • At the end of the season, the team with the best record wins the league. There is no prize, but you will win the respect of your peers knowing you are on an awesome handball team.

Results from opening night

06/07/2006

Dick and Pat Scherzer dominated Sutera and Lapin, 21-8 and 21-5.
Craig and Slogan owned the semi-rematch against Skelly and Serrone, 21-4 and 21-10.
And in a surprise main event, Little and Duckers defeated Pfannensteil and Gaither, don't know scores.

It was a big night for the Scherzer's, so Tony Tocco was last seen pondering a leap from the Broadway Bridge. Fortunately for hell, he chose to wait a couple more weeks. All in all it was a great night, I'm trying to dig up some pictures, I'll post them if I get them. Look for another one of these in mid-July. Perhaps a rematch to the rematch?
